KANSAS CITY - Great Lakes Christian College women's volleyball showed improvement in their three-game weekend series agaisnt Spurgeon College and Calvary College, but came away winless.
GLCC first faced Spurgeon in a Friday doubleheader. The visitors opened the first game with a set one victory, 25-23, their second set won this season, holding off a late charge after a 5-1 run gave them a four-point lead late in the set.
Spurgeon rebounded quickly, however, winning sets two and three in quick succession, 25-14 and 25-17. Great Lakes opened up a 16-10 lead in set four, but Spurgeon came storming back and pushed the game into more points, breaking a set point and closing out with the serve to win the set 29-27 and the match 3-1.
Stella Dunham led GLCC in scoring with 14 points. Laura Ganong picked up four aces and 11 points and Madison Outwin recorded 18 assists. As a team, GLCC recorded a kill percentage of .081. Mollie Singleton led Spurgeon with 25 points while Lizzie Deaton picked up 23 assists.
Spurgeon claimed game two of the doubleheader as well. Great Lakes hung around in each set, but were ultimately swept 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-18). Emma Hokanson scored 11 in the match and Outwin again led the team with 13 assists. Despite not winning a set, the team's kill percentage improved in game two to .118. Deaton led Spurgeon with 17 points while Singleton racked up 22 assists.
The next day, Great Lakes faced Calvary College. They kept it close in set one, losing 25-19, but a 25-8 set two opened the game up for Calvary, which closed with a 25-18 win in set three. Hokanson and Ganong led the team with four points and the offense recorded a .018 kill percentage. Elle Davis paced Calvary with 10 points and Hannah Davidson contributed 20 assists.
Great Lakes will head out on a roadtrip in the opposite direction next week as they take on Mount Mary and Finlandia in Hancock, Michigan at the SISU Classic.
