Player Spotlight: Gavin Ewalt is trying something different
LANSING, Mich. - Gavin Ewalt was a computer engineering major at Iowa State. Then, he says, "(I) realized I wasn't enjoying it."
In 2019, after two years at ISU, Ewalt started looking for youth ministry programs around Lansing and, according to him, stumbled across Great Lakes. Now the former All-State defender from Grimes, Iowa leads Great Lakes men's soccer into the program's third season since its relaunch in 2019.
Ewalt had played soccer since he was young. "My parents put me in a bunch of sports and soccer is the one I enjoyed most."
He had hung up his cleats while at Iowa State, but his change of major gave him another chance to play in college, and he has made the most of it. Ewalt has started all but one game for Great Lakes since 2019, anchoring the back line for a GLCC team that went from allowing 9.64 goals per game in 2019 to 4.14 in 2020.
He was named first-team All-Region last year and helped nearly triple GLCC's winning percentage.
The junior says he doesn't know what comes next for him, but for now he wants "to help continue to grow this soccer program into something competitive."
