JV Men's Basketball holds on, beats Bethel to snap skid
LANSING, Mich. - Great Lakes Christian College JV men's basketball ended a three-game losing streak on Monday night, surviving a late run by Bethel College to win 77-74 at the Doty Center.
Great Lakes scored 10 of the first 12 points in the game and led by 11 in the middle of the first half, but Bethel stormed back to take the lead. GLCC responded with a 6-0 run to close the half and went into the locker room up 39-33.
Great Lakes picked up where they left off in the second, building a 17-point lead with 11:11 left in the game. Bethel once again roared back to life, scoring 11 unanswered and trimming the lead back to single digits, then taking off on a 12-2 run late in the period to cut the lead to three, 77-74, with 1:34 left.
GLCC had three chances to push their lead to two possessions, but Larry McLean missed the front-end of three consecutive one-and-ones. Defensively, however, they stood their ground, not allowed Bethel to put up a shot and forcing two turnovers in the dying moments to hold on for the win.
McClean led Great Lakes with 19 points and seven assists, and also picked up six rebounds. Joshua Thompson scored 18 with five boards and five assists and Javion Williams had 14 points and eight rebounds off the bench. Six different players grabbed at least five rebounds for GLCC as they outrebounded Bethel 39-32.
Maurice Russell led Bethel with 21 points and eight rebounds. Derrick Sayles scored 12.
GLCC will be on the road for the first time this season next Monday, facing Bethel in a return match.
