Westerlund Announces Recruiting Class for 21-22 Season
LANSING, Mich - Coach Richard Westerlund is excited to announce his recruiting class for 2021-2022 season. Westerlund remaked "I am thrilled about the class we have coming in. Our goal was to really find guys that could help us get better. We identified some areas where we needed to improve and we feel these guys address those areas. We wanted to add more size and athleticism to give us more roster flexibility. I am very excited about these guys future in a GLCC uniform." Coach Westerlund's class is highlighted by four transfers and two incoming freshmen.
Rasheed Brown 6'2 Guard; Flint Carman Ainsworth HS - Brown one of two first year recruits for Westerlund went to Carman Ainsworth HS in Flint, MI where he helped lead his team to a 12-3 record in the shortened pandemic season. He was named Honorable Mention SVL his senior season. Coach Westerlund said this about Brown, "Rocky has great toughness. He is familiar with some of the guys who came through our program which certainly helped in us recruiting him. He is versatile wing who can guard multiple spots. He is a guy who is skilled, and knows how to press. I am thrilled to welcome him to the family."
Jaivon Felton 6'8 Forward; Delta College - Felton a product of Flint, Michigan, comes to GLCC from Junior College ranks. Felton sat out the 2020-21 season but in his last season with Delta he averaged 6.8 ppg and 6.2 rpg on 52 percent shooting. Westerlund said this about Felton, "I absolutely love how hard Jaivon plays. He has one of the best motors I have seen from a big man. His versaility defensively is what makes him so special. He can guard every spot which makes him great in our pressing system. He does tremendous job rebounding out of his area too. We expect Jaivon to do very well for us."
Noah Rawlings 6'5 Guard; Pensacola Christian College - Rawlings comes to GLCC by way of Pensacola Christian College. The Richmond, Virginia native played two seasons for the Eagles where he averaged 8.9 ppg, 2.8 rpg, and 1.7 apg for his career at PCC. Westerlund said this about Rawlings, "Noah is tremendous person. His length and his ability to stretch the floor is what we really liked about him. He can guard multiple spots and provides really nice versaility for us on both sides of the ball."
Anthony Sanders 6'6 Guard; Delta College - Sanders comes to GLCC from Delta College where he was teammates with Jaivon Felton. The Saginaw, Michigan native sat out of the 2020-21 season. In his last season for Delta College he averaged 12.1 ppg, 5.4 rpg and 2.3 apg on 48 percent shooting from the floor. Westerlund said this about Sanders, "Thrilled to land Ant, he brings great size and length at the wing position. He does a great job slashing and finding his spots in the lane. He is good creator. He brings a ton of value defensively because he can guard 1-5. He is a great fit for our system. We expect Anthony to do very well for us."
Kylan Shipp 5'10 Guard; Muskegon CC/ Lindsey Wilson - Shipp was redshirted for the 20-21 season at Lindsey Wilson. The Detroit product had a strong JUCO career at Muskeon CC earning 3rd Team All American his sophomore year averaging 19.1 ppg, 5.1 apg, and 5.0 rpg on 45 percent shooting from the floor, and 40 percent from three. Westerlund said this about Shipp, "I am thrilled to add a player and person like Shipp. Shipp is a dynamic player that will impact our roster. He plays bigger than his size and has unlimited range. He is a very gifted offensive player. He has the ability to not only create for himself but also his teammates."
Kaleb Thomas 6'3 Guard; Oak Ridge HS - Thomas comes to us from Oak Ridge HS in Orlando, Florida. He was a part of very good high school team where that went to the final four in the state of Florida. Coach Westerlund said this about Kaleb, "Kaleb is a great athlete that can really space the floor. He played on a very good high school team and knows how to win. I think he will fit well with what we do. We are excited to add a played like Kaleb to our family.
The Crusaders will open their season October 26th on the road at Concordia Ann Arbor. The Men's Basketball team finished 20-21 campaign ranked #8 in the country with their third consecutive winning season.
